Hi,

This may not be something for the ML407 Discussion Board, but I'll give it a try anyway.
I am a private pilot (I own a Cessna 182S) and Flight Simulator enthusiast from the Netherlands, and I love to fly in a model Spitfire Mk XIV with Griffon engine. I have never flown a real Spitfire.

Now I am involved in a discussion with the developer of this model, concerning the engine sound.

The situation is the following:
I do a nice and easy climb at +12 lbs boost to 40,000 ft, then I simply push the throttle into full boost and dive perpendicular to ground level. I was expecting the engine to rev up to a soaring scream, but that didn't happen.
The question is: does the engine or the prop go up in revs, and if so, how much? And what does it sound like in the cockpit?

Only someone who has flown a Spitfire could answer this question.

Maybe someone at ML407?

Thanks,

Regards,

I haven't flown one, but, unless the pitch of the prop was changed I would imagine the engine would be forced to run up at a faster speed... in the game IL2 the aircraft revs increase while diving at speed if I recall correctly.

Maybe Carolyn could answer, ML407 is a MkIXe (or was before conversion to a trainer) I believe - but the principle should be the same.

This Spit you're flying - it wouldn't happen to be the Real Air Simulations spit would it?

James,

yes, it is from Real Air Simulations.
Apart from this very minor issue, a great package! Lots of fun and realism.

Yes it's fantastic, I tried to get them to make a Mosquito but apparently they don't make money from doing war birds, people flying FS2k4 usually want commercial aircraft / small GA aircraft. Can't think why! Smiley

I have FS2004 and CFS2 installed.  Tried to install CFS3 but haven't had the time to work out why it won't play on my Windows 2000 professional

setup.  I did purchase from www.pcaviator.com the Spitfire XIV by Real Air (Profisoft) and  Spitfire by Airplane Heaven (Just flight).

but have not installed them because of CFS3 difficulties.  I bought the Spitfire because it apparently has every Mark from K5054 to the 22 and a

period setting of Duxford aerodrome and village.  Anyone had any experience with either program that I could benefit by?  I would greatly

appreciate any help.

Hi David,

I tried the Just Flight spits and I have to say, they aren't a patch on the Real Air Sim Spit.. it also comes with a period airfield I think, West Malling perhaps - I can't remember.

I have to say the Real Air machibe leaves all the other add on aircraft looking a bit pants to be honest.

Hi,

Real Air also has a good website with updates, etc.

www.realairsimulations.com

But I think this topic is going off track.
What about the sound of the Spitfire Mk XIV?

Yes, sorry Frank.

Carolyn usually checks the board once every few days, so please be patient - I am sure she will answer when she gets a chance.

Out of interest, if you dive in a Cessna what happens? Smiley

James:

I'm only doing stunts in FS!

In real life I am a nice weather pilot, not taking any risks at all, also because I want to keep the 30-year old Cessna in one piece as long as I can. I am usually flying relatives or neighbours on a local tour over the IJssel and the Randmeren. So I can't tell you what happens.

Frank, I am not a pilot, just a navigator with some stick time, but it struck me as odd that the the vertical maneuver that you describe would be

possible or desirable or are you just testing the reality factor of your simulator?  Anyway, you have rekindled my interest in my own Mark XIV

simulator.  Thanks

I love ML407!

The Merlin engine will not increase in revs due to the spitfire having a variable pitch prop unlike a non variable pitch propeller which will when you have to watch not to over rev the eingine in aerobatic flying. The only increase will be in speed in the dive. A dive in real life from that height would certinaly exceed VNE and pull the wings off in the pull out prior to hitting the ground.

The sound is fantastic - look out for our new DVD next year.......
