Couldnt get down to duxford today for the airshow today if i said im a little bit gutted it is an understatment . With nothing better to do i decided to wash the car around 4pm just as i was leathering off i heard the distant sound of a plane it sounded quite beefy as it drew closer you couldnt mistake the sound of the merlin and a spitfire passed over quite high up mind but you cant mistake that silouette I watched it pass adn felt even worse for not been down at duxford . to my amazement i heard the sound of the spitfire again and watched for a few mins as the plane did a few circles and the eventually fly off into the distance

Im in Rotherham South Yorkshire anyone that can shed some light as to why and what spit it was i would be interested as we dont get many of them over this way

regards

Hi Dan,
According to the Battle Of Britain Memorial Flight schedule there was due to be a Spitfire belonging to them display at Elvington today so this may be what you saw, not sure how far that is from you though, but don't know which one. I have also seen that it was to display at Elsecar which after lookin at a map is pretty near you.
Hope this is of some help.

All the best

Rob

Not to rub salt into the wound, but you missed what was, eventually, a cracking day, culminating in sixteen Spitfire variants filling the sky over Duxford, including ML407, piloted by Richard. I had my hands full with audio recording equipment - I really didn't want to take my concentration away from the recording - so I sincerely hope that someone got  pictures of the massed ranks coming out of the sun. There then followed and extraordinarily intricate display, with planes weaving in and out of each other's paths, buzzing the crowd line, tail-chasing and all sorts of amazing stuff. Richard - I'd dearly love to know how long that display took to plan; it took my breath away and judging by the enraptured looks on the faces of all around me, it was the very best way to end the day and the weekend.

Oh, and add to that four Hurricanes, Sally B, six Yaks, The Red Arrows, BOBMF, the Me109 Bouchon and the Shuttleworth Gloster Gladiator along with some of the usual suspects. It was a bit overcast a times, very windy indeed and, save for a visit from Paul B to my little corner of the car park (many thanks, Paul - listen out for those foxes!) rather lonely, but the last fifteen minutes made the whole day entirely worthwhile. (Oh - almost forgot Stevie K braced against the railings behind a static Griffon while it was running and hitting it with a hammer tending it lovingly after it had stopped.)

That's it for me for this season; work and other matters will keep me away from the remaining shows this year, but with The Gathering, followed by Bentwaters and now today, I don't think it's been a bad year.

I'm downloading the audio and will post a link to an MP3 of that glorious noise as a fine assortment of unsilenced Rolls-Royce engines thunders overhead.

Best wishes to all and huge thanks as always to Carolyn, Richard, Olivia and the ML407 team who devote so much care and attention to letting the rest of us share in the dream.

Have a happy autumn.

Regards,

John

Tony,

You don't need to be IT literate to have a quick listen: if you go to the thread on this board called "Listen With Soundman", you'll find two links; one of the mass fly over and the other of the main part of the display. Just clicking them should start your computer automatically playing the file directly in your internet browser. As the second file is quite large, you may have to wait a while before it starts playing, though.

If you have problems, let me know and I'll sort something out. Maybe it is time for a Volume 2 of Sounds Of Spitfire. I've gathered quite a bit more material since the first one...

Best wishes,

John

Good to see you John, down at your far flung outpost of Duxford. Thouroghly enjoyed our chat, quite enlightning and yes will listen out for said foxes !
I think you summed up the day /weekend to a tee.  An excellent line up, stunning displays,. culminating in that magical sixteen Spitfire ( ok, one was a seafire) display.
The way everyone was weaving, climbing, diving , chasing  gave most of us not old enough to have witnessed the Batle of Britain an idea what the skies above Southern England must have looked like, but without the actual combat .A special well done to Richard, in his first mass Spitfire display, brilliant.
Though I didn't get to say hello to Stevie, I did see him enjoying himself with the Static Griffon.Just as I was leaving had a quick chat with Richard and a very proud and rightly so Carolyn. Oh then I bumped into Tony  ( Tony and Maggie from the Stall), who was looking very well, didn't see Maggie as she was in the car park, they send their regards.

Tony,

Send me a private message with contact details and I'll see what I can do. An idea is forming for a second volume of sounds that may well have a wider distribution and will contribute to the fund...

John
