I have to go to New York for work and thought I might take my wife with me - then the bill for my ticket came through: bear in mind that a couple of years ago, I could do the same flight for under £300

Equivalent Airfare: 607.00 USD

U.S. Customs User Fee: 5.50

U.S. Immigration User Fee: 7.00

U.S. APHIS User Fee: 5.00

U.S. Federal Transportation Tax: 32.60

September 11th Security Fee: 2.50

U.K. Air Passenger Duty: 98.10

U.K . Passenger Service Charge: 50.10

Fuel Surcharge: 286.00

U.S. Passenger Facility Charge: 4.50

Per Person Total: 1,098.30 USD - almost £700

On a recent trip to Galway, the taxes and surcharges were almost double the flight costs and then we had to pay €10 each to get into the departure lounge - an airport facilty fee, apparently.

I guess the days of low-cost flying are pretty much over.

Regards,

John

I take it that the price quoted was from Heathrow ( very expensive to land /take off from )  - I have just made enquiries about air fares Perth to Melbourne ( Moto GP at Philip Island in October) for 2 adults -  Return/ Economy and have been quoted 1417 AUD - didn't even consider Business Class at 6100 AUD - it's a 4 hour flight and we are in the same country !!  And they wonder why most Australians go abroad for their holidays
