The late American actor, Steve McQueen? Beats me when he said it though.

Right again Clive,  it comes from his Le Mans film although I'm sure I heard him say it in an interview when discussing his bike racing.

Ok, here's an obscure one......

"Gentlemen. We have kicked a rabid dog."

Any ideas?

Cheers,

In TORA TORA TORA he said:

"All I fear we have done is wake a sleeping giant and fill him with a terrible resolve"

He had great foresight having spent time in the US in the 30's

Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto, apparently Smiley

Yes, James you are correct!! Apparently it's attributed to him after learning the attack on the US Pacific Fleet came before a declaration of war. Andy's quote given at the end of the film, Tora, Tora, Tora apparently was based upon Admiral Yamamoto's initial quote.

Admiral Yamamoto knew of the USA's ability to manufacture armaments in large numbers and their access to virtually an unlimited amount of raw materials.

War itself is a very sad business for all.

Cheers,

Ok, a new quote....

"They couldn't hit an elephant at this distance."

Who said it and when?

Cheers and good luck!

Aha, I know this one! (At least, I think I do - not sure of rank or spelling.) (Colonel?) John Sedgewick, during the American Civil War, just before he was shot by a sniper!

Regards,

John

Edit: OK, I looked it up - General John Sedgwick - Battle of Spotsylvania Courthouse. Full story can be found here: http://www.civilwarhome.com/sedgwickdeath.htm

Correct Soundman John!!

US General Sedgwick was admonishing his soldiers for ducking and flinching at the occasional single round fired their way. He said he was ashamed of them hiding from single bullets and asked what were they going to do when a whole front line fired at them? He then said that they couldn't hit an elephant at this distance just before he was shot dead off his horse by a Confederate sniper.

Someone else like to pick up the gauntlet and continue this little historical thread?

Cheers,
Clive from Canada.

OK, here are a couple from the same person:

"If you want to grow old as a pilot, you've got to know when to push it, and when to back off."

"Most pilots learn, when they pin on their wings and go out and get in a fighter, especially, that one thing you don't do, you don't believe anything anybody tells you about an airplane."

Hi all;

Ok, things got quiet. So, who said this?

"War is the supreme test of man in which he rises to heights never approached in any other activity."

Ok, let's go for it shall we?

Cheers,
Clive from Canada.

Here's a guess -
It sounds like US Gen. George Patton?

Yes, Mike you are correct!! It was indeed General George S. Patton Jr of the US Army.

Anyone else want to try out some famous quotes?
